Adamant about reconnecting with her daughter, whom she birthed during her time in prison, the story delves into themes of redemption and forgiveness as she seeks to rebuild her life. Although the reception has been mixed, it still stands higher than the previous two Hoover movies, which opened to middling-to-negative reviews. Associated Press‘ Mark Kennedy described the movie as a “well-crafted, well-acted sad-happy Hoover adaptation”, whereas US Weekly‘s Erin Stecker added that the movie will leave the viewers in tears.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s Frank Scheck praised the character work in the movie, adding that amid the movie’s melodramatic proceedings, the characters do feature some sympathetic appeal. The Wrap‘s William Bibbiani shared that it’s good but not amazing, which sums up the sentiment surrounding the movie.
It’s a whole lot of pretty good and not a lot of amazing, but hey, remember how Tyriq Withers also starred in ‘Him?’ No one can say they got the title wrong.
If you’re a fan of Hoover’s work, going by some early reviews, it seems this will be the most authentic adaptation of her bookwork. It’ll be interesting to see how the general audience will perceive it once it opens in theaters.
