A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was able to bring a lot of fans back to Westeros. After what seemed like an endless winter of content that did not align with what Game of Thrones fans fell in love with, Ira Parker was able to deliver what the latter four seasons of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon simply could not.

However, as is the case with all great shows, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms left some questions unanswered. These stem from the changes that were made in the story by Ira Parker, and it seems that George R.R. Martin fully approves of them.

1. Is Maekar Going To Send Soldiers After Egg and Dunk?

Maekar Targaryen is a tired father. The scene where he refers to Egg as his last son is very telling about where the future King of Westeros is mentally. His children have disappointed him. The one son who could bring him any pride was sent away at a young age. Aegon was his last chance to prove to himself, and perhaps the family, that he was a father capable of raising his own children.

Aegon, being a child, didn’t understand any of this. He would serve no knight but Ser Duncan. Targaryens were always known to be stubborn. What remains to be seen in Season 2 is whether Maekar wishes to bring his boy back, or if he would settle for Egg making the rounds of the kingdom with Ser Duncan. Perhaps once Aemon writes to him that Dunk and Egg visited him, Maekar would accept his faith and let his son explore the world?

2. Will Dunk Find Out Aegon Lied To Him Again?

Aegon, at the end of the day, is a child. Duncan was especially hurt when he found out that Aegon lied to him. It might be of major consequence that Ser Dunk has now taken a Prince of the Realm without the leave of his parents.

It is most likely going to be an important plot point when Dunk finds out that Aegon actually lied to him. I reckon it could drive the conflict of Season 2. On the other hand, Aegon might resolve the situation with his lord father by himself, with Dunk being none the wiser. It could also be possible that Maekar’s not being able to locate Egg was a gag and would be of no major consequence.

3. Is Dunk Truly a Knight?

As reported by Collider, Ira Parker left Dunk’s knighthood status ambiguous on purpose. There is no knowing whether Ser Arlan knighted Dunk at all. Speaking with the outlet, Parker said:

There is no confirmation, one way or the other, coming out of that scene. That’s exactly how Mr. R.R. Martin requested it. It remains [ambiguous] and people can decide for themselves.

Ser Arlan might have knighted Dunk, or he would have died without doing so. It is likely that Season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is going to intercut between the events of The Sworn Sword and tableaus of Dunk’s history that are not in the source materials. Martin trusted Parker to build out his world in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, so perhaps there are some surprises waiting in Dunk’s past?

4. How Does Lyonel Baratheon Cope After Dunk’s Rejection?

Lyonel Baratheon had grown really fond of Ser Duncan. He invited the Knight to serve in his army. This was exactly what Ser Duncan wanted. At the beginning of the season, Dunk was hellbent on being taken into the service of a great house. This is something Ser Arlan, according to Dunk, was never able to do.

However, when he sees what you need to trade away to live that life of wealth, renown, and influence, Dunk is ready to be a hedge knight for the rest of his life. One can imagine that Ser Lyonel wished to have Dunk as a companion. Given the history that the two characters are going to have, I would not put it beyond Ira Parker to flesh out the relationship between Ser Duncan and the future Lord Baratheon.

5. Does Aegon Have His Father’s Signet?

In the novella, Aegon is given a signet by his father. Aegon is forbidden from revealing his identity, given that the realm is still infested with Blackfyre sympathizers. However, should Aegon find himself in trouble he cannot get out of, he had the signet of his father that would confirm him to be Aegon of the House Targaryen.

Given that Aegon has not taken his father’s leave in the show, does that mean Maekar never gave him the signet? Of course, Aegon could have stolen it, or could receive it in the time that will pass between Seasons 1 and 2. Either way, Ira Parker cannot get Season 2 here fast enough.
