The upcoming Darth Maul show will change the iconic Star Wars villain in a shocking way.

Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord is a new animated series that will premiere on Disney+ this coming April. Created by Dave Filoni, the show is set after the events of The Clone Wars and once again features Sam Witwer as the voice of Darth Maul.

The synopsis reads, “Set after the events of The Clone Wars, Maul plots to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire. There, he crosses paths with a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan, who could be the apprentice he is seeking, that will aid him in his relentless pursuit for revenge.”

What is the update on the Star Wars Darth Maul show?

Speaking with The HoloFiles, Witwer said that some things have changed about Maul since we last saw him in Clone Wars. While Maul absolutely hated Jedi in Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, that may no longer be the case in Shadow Lord.

“He was trained to hate and destroy the Jedi without ever questioning it,” Witwer said. “Now he’s looking at the galaxy going, ‘Boy, we could sure use a Jedi Knight or two.’ At least with the Jedi you knew where they stood. There’s something to respect there. This Empire, he sees no values there, just the naked grab for influence, power, and money. Principles are gone. And he looks at that with a certain level of distaste. He may not have agreed with the Jedi Knights, but at least they had principles. You knew who you were dealing with and you could reason with that. There’s no reasoning with the Empire.”

In addition to Witwer, the voice cast of the Lucasfilm Animation show includes Gideon Adion, Wagner Moura, Richard Ayoade, and more.
