Netflix and Legendary have officially found the next cast member who will be joining the highly anticipated Gundam movie, based on the iconic Japanese animated TV show. The live-action project has been in development since 2021.
Who is joining the Gundam movie cast?
Per Deadline, Oppenheimer star Jason Clarke has signed on to join the cast of Netflix’s Gundam movie, which will be led by Noah Centineo (Black Adam) and Sydney Sweeney (Madame Web). Clarke is no stranger to the sci-fi action genre, as he previously appeared in 2008’s Death Race, 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and 2015’s Terminator Genisys. Further details about their characters and the movie’s plot are still under wraps.
The upcoming live-action mecha movie will be written and directed by Sweet Tooth showrunner Jim Mickle. Before Mickle, Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts was previously attached to helm the project. The film will be produced by Mickle and Linda Moran through their Nightshade banner, along with Centineo and Enzo Marc. It is a co-production by Legendary Entertainment and Bandai Namco Filmworks.
Created by Hajime Yatate and Yoshiyuki Tomino, the franchise first started in 1979 with the TV series titled Mobile Suit Gundam. The original anime’s story was set in the Universal Century, an era in which humanity’s growing population has led people to emigrate to space colonies. It centered around pilots fighting in massive mechanized contraptions known as mobile suits.
The massively popular Mecha anime and science fiction media franchise is Sunrise’s multi-billion-dollar property that has spawned a multi-platform universe encompassing televised anime, manga, animated films, video games, plastic models, toys, and novels, among other media. Gundam continues to dominate Bandai Namco’s earnings over four decades after its inception.
