Ryan Coogler recently spoke about his time collaborating with Chadwick Boseman and the lessons he learned from the late actor. He explained how their work on Black Panther influenced the way he now views filmmaking. The director also spoke about how Boseman’s death changed the way he approaches his career.
Ryan Coogler talks Chadwick Boseman’s passing
Ryan Coogler recently spoke about the lasting effect Chadwick Boseman has had on him professionally and personally. During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the director reflected on their time together and the lessons he took from Boseman.
Coogler recalled that during production on the first Black Panther film he was under intense pressure and often too focused on whether the movie would succeed to fully appreciate Boseman’s work. “Engaging with him on an artistic level, conversations that will forever just be between me and him — I was about 30 years old, stressed, completely out of my mind, sleep-deprived, convinced that the movie wasn’t going to work,” he said. Looking back, he added, “I robbed myself of truly enjoying that privilege.”
He also praised the late star’s consistency on set. Coogler noted, “Even of sitting there and enjoying the countless Chadwick Boseman takes, because he didn’t have a bad take.” He explained that Boseman’s passing forced him to rethink how he values those moments. “When he passed, I’m like, ‘Oh my God, how much stuff have I not allowed myself to enjoy because I was in my own head, feeling like I was unworthy,’” he added.
The director said those experiences now influence how he approaches every set. He added, “I’m going to take the lessons from Chad for the rest of my life. I have to see the good in things, see the value in things, and not let impostor syndrome or guilt or negativity rob me of moments with my cast.”
Boseman died in 2020 after a private battle with cancer, a loss that deeply affected the cast and crew when Coogler returned to direct Wakanda Forever. He also described in the interview how the production moved forward while many members of it were still grieving.
