After waiting for quite some time, one of the most fan-favorite Yellowstone characters is coming back to TV screens. Luke Grimes’ Kayce Dutton is set to lead his own spin-off TV show, called Marshals, and the show just dropped its first trailer.
However, within the first minutes of the trailer, it is evident that Kayce has undergone a huge loss. Since his wife, Monica, is missing in the trailer, fans were quick to assume that it is she who has died. Needless to say, fans were pretty alarmed, some also relieved, after learning about Monica’s disappearance.
Here is how fans reacted (via Instagram):
Killing Monica is honestly good for the show. She was insufferable. @zakkittle
Well at least Monica will not spent every episode crying. @arturo.grrd
I always liked Monica and the family dynamic they had. No matter what Kaycee wanted to protect them.@pippa2
Wait! who dies? Monica??? I wish we get to see more of Tate.@hamadorwhat
Monica is out? Kinda good. Tate, too? Kid was a bit of a brat.@kimmpardy
The series does not reveal what happens to Monica. But her absence in the cast list and narrative setup has spurred speculation that her death is either central to the new series’ premise or will be revealed early in Marshals’ first season
Marshals Season 1 Trailer Promises An Unhinged Kayce Dutton
Marshals, the new Yellowstone spin-off, centers on Kayce Dutton, the son of John Dutton. While the original show focused on ranch politics and family legacy, the preview flips the tone toward crime, federal enforcement, and personal demons.
At the end of Yellowstone, we had seen Kayce getting a happy ending after he sold the family’s Montana ranch and settled with his own family, wife Monica, and son Tate. But the trailer of the new show implies Monica is gone or perhaps dead.
In several shots, we see Kayce living alone and even visiting a grave. In this version, Kayce is haunted, solitary, and reeling from an unseen but deeply felt loss. In the trailer, we see him walking through Montana landscapes with a clear emotional weight. In one shot, he says:
Yellowstone is gone, same for most of my family. As for vengeance, the day is still young.
After the events of the original series, Kayce has now joined an elite unit of US Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana. Although his son is still around, Kayce looks like he is no longer anchored by family life as he once.
The voiceovers and visuals suggest Kayce is grappling with personal loss while confronting new threats, giving the show both procedural grit and Yellowstone-style soul-searching. Yet, judging from the trailer, Kayce is more unhinged than ever, perhaps because he seems to have nothing to lose anymore.
