The third entry in Pixar’s acclaimed superhero franchise, Incredibles 3, is expected to commence production this March, per Holly Hunter, who is returning to voice Elastigirl in the threequel. Originally announced back in 2024 after Inside Out 2 registered the biggest box office numbers in the studio’s history, the threequel continues Pixar’s reliance on legacy-driven sequels. As for the plot, like the fans, Hunter is also in the dark about how the third movie will continue the franchise, adding (via Screen Rant):
I don’t know I never do know. I never know what the stories are of Incredibles. I go in and I record with Brad, or in this case, I don’t know if it’s going to be Brad, but I think that he’s been writing the script. So it’s very exciting.
Although the sequel was undoubtedly a notch below the first movie, which is often regarded as one of the best in the realm of CBMs, the third movie has the opportunity to usher this IP to new heights. But as Hunter noted, Brad Bird, the creator behind the original classic and Ratatouille, won’t be returning to direct the third movie.

Why Is Brad Bird Not Directing Incredibles 3?
Considering he was instrumental in crafting some of Pixar’s best works that helped define the studio as a juggernaut in the industry, Brad Bird’s not returning to helm Incredibles 3 does seem significant on paper. According to THR, it mostly stems from scheduling conflicts following his commitments to Raygun.

On the other hand, he’s still penning the screenplay and will serve as a producer on the movie, set to be helmed by Peter Sohn, whose credentials include The Good Dinosaur and Elemental. Moreover, Sohn’s history with Pixar dates back to the 2000s, and Bird has apparently been a mentor to The Good Dinosaur director.
The Ratatouille director has also spoken highly of Sohn, describing him as insatiably curious and eager to understand every part of the process. Hopefully, Sohn will live up to Brad Bird and fans’ expectations with the third movie in the revered franchise.
Incredibles 3 Needs To Avoid One Issue That Plagued the Sequel
Although Incredibles 2 is by no means a bad movie and is completely serviceable, serviceable is the last word one would associate with a Brad Bird Pixar movie. On that note, it was a bit disappointing, especially given the wait of 14 years between the original and the follow-up.

As for what went wrong, much of the blame lies with Disney’s corporate leadership rather than the creatives themselves. While on the surface, the two movies had a 14-year-long gap, the movie didn’t officially commence production until 2014, and Bird’s commitments to Tomorrowland didn’t conclude until 2015.
It also doesn’t help that Disney moved the sequel’s release window up by a full year by swapping dates with Toy Story 4 to secure a Summer slot, and the result of a compressed development cycle is clearly felt in the final product. With Incredibles 3 expected to arrive in 2028, hopefully, the follow-up will be more in line with the Toy Story sequels in terms of quality.
