Amazon’s upcoming God of War has tapped Ryan Hurst as Kratos. Originally played by Terrence C. Carson in the Greek saga, Christopher Judge reinvented the character for the Norsa-saga, which landed him a win for Best Voice Artist at The Games Award. While Judge’s depiction of the character has become inseparable from how fans perceive the character, and many even campaigned for Judge to reprise the role in the live-action retelling, this sentiment doesn’t discredit Hurst’s casting (via Game Fragger).
Given the actor’s own history with the PlayStation IP, who previously voiced Kratos in the unanimous hit, God of War: Ragnarök, Hurst is undoubtedly a great choice for the live-action retelling. And much of the discourse of how his interpretation of the character gets received will boil down to the writing.
Where Have You Seen God of War Actor Ryan Hurst Before?
Beyond his performance as Thor in Ragnarök, which already adds weight to Hurst’s casting as he’s familiar with the IP, the actor is also notable for his work in Sons of Anarchy, where he played Opie Winston, often described as the heart of the show.

His other notable credits include the unhinged Chick Hogan in Bates Motel and Beta in The Walking Dead. Although TWD, during his later years, was subject to numerous issues, Hurst’s portrayal of Beta was arguably one of its bright spots, largely thanks to the actor’s dominance in the role.
Moreover, his physical presence in the shoes of Beta serves as a strong case why he’d deliver on the physical front as Kratos. With filming set to kickstart this year, it’ll be interesting to see if this can make the 2027 release window.
