A young lady with supernatural powers, also known as Firestarter.
While the book is one of the closest to Stephen King’s heart, the movie that starred Drew Barrymore felt like a disastrous outing for the novelist. Talking to Cult Oddities, the king of horror shed light on his dismay, stating.
Firestarter is one of the worst of the bunch, even though in terms of story, it’s very close to the original. But it’s flavorless; it’s like cafeteria mashed potatoes. There are things that happen in terms of special effects in that movie that make no sense to me whatsoever.
The highly accomplished writer further mentioned he was clueless as to why Drew Barrymore’s – who played the lead child – hair blew up every time she was about to start a fire. He even criticized the actor, maintaining that they had great potential in them.
For those unversed, the case in point is the 1984 release that starred the Charlie’s Angels actress as Charlie McGee, and David Keith as her father with powers, Andy. Other renowned names were Martin Sheen, George C. Scott, and more.

Firestarter is a 1980 novel by Stephen King that was adapted into a movie not once but twice. While the first adaptation went on to become a cult classic horror thriller, the second entry starred Zac Efron alongside a unique cast, almost touching the hearts of the author’s followers.
Talking about the old classic, it represents a better Charlie McGee. All thanks to the then-young talent, Drew Barrymore. Her character grips you with emotion, making you feel every little pain she endures. From her giggles to the scared emotions and then the pyrokinetic frustration, you think how cruel the world has been to her.
On the other hand, when Efron took over the role of the leading character’s father, Andy, everyone cheered him. The character was supposed to be someone who knew what experiment he and his daughter had to go through. Although donning a brave man’s smile on his face, behind the deep eyes, he carried a fear that kept on poking his consciousness about how ugly the life of Charlie is.
However, overall, the 1984 entry was scary stuff to watch than the 2022 reboot. What gives it an even more eerie touch is the era it was made in. It was the same period when John Carpenter’s movies were hailed, and zombie films were on the rise, with Re-Animator putting its name in the history books. The 80s horror is well defined in the Mark L. Lester film.

Although we have got two mind-blowing entries of the movie in question, both of which carry their best sides, the 1984 film has been haunting us all over the years.
What makes it a cult classic is the fact that it was fresh, as the story hit the big screens right within four years of being imagined by Stephen King.
Moreover, the era was full of such horror being enjoyed by a generation of movie lovers, and yet it shines brightly amongst other similar outings.
Drew Barrymore looked cute as a kid, but at the same time, carried a look that would have us all stay away from her. Meanwhile, this was also one of the first times the audience saw the cruel experiments being performed on a kid, making our guts wrench.
