Prepping for your return to Westeros in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms? Great news—you don’t need to watch all eight seasons of the original show because Heath Ledger’s 2001 medieval action-comedy movie, A Knight’s Tale, is the best appetizer for the upcoming spinoff!

Despite mixed reviews and a modest commercial success, Ledger’s film earned a cult following among fans of the medieval fantasy genre. It is lighthearted, packed with action, and even features classic rock songs as an important part of the plot.

Even the hero, William Thatcher, shares similarities with Ser Duncan the Tall from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

A Knight’s Tale Has Uncanny Resemblance With HBO’s New Spinoff

From the premise of A Knight’s Tale, one would guess HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was inspired by the movie. Written and directed by Brian Helgeland, the film involved a jousting tournament and a poor squire whose master had died. Ledger’s Thatcher competed in his mentor’s place even though these tournaments are only for nobles.

The new Game of Thrones prequel has a slightly different twist. After the death of his mentor, low-born hedge knight Dunk participates in a tourney at Ashford Meadow, but he encounters a much more dangerous fate when he clashes with a Targaryen prince.

Their striking similarities undoubtedly lie in the humor and heart of both franchises, putting an impoverished yet pure-hearted knight at the center of the story.

Heath Ledger’s Interview Proved Dunk & William Are The Same

During A Knight’s Tale premiere, Ledger took time to answer some questions about why he was drawn to the project. He said that he fell in love with his character’s journey upon reading the script, as well as the fairy tale aspect of the story.

Describing the experience as fun, he also explained why he loved portraying Thatcher (via YouTube):

I liked the fact that he was noble in here [mind] and here [heart] as opposed to materialistically. I liked him stomping on the aristocracy.

This pretty much resembles Dunk’s positive traits and how he was depicted in Martin’s novellas. Apart from sharing similar qualities, they also follow the path of the typical underdogs who went from zero to hero.
