Fans are worried over a beloved friendship between two favorite characters after Netflix released the trailer for Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2.
What beloved friendship are fans worried about in the Stranger Things Season 5 Part 2 trailer?
Steve (Joe Keery) and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) have been at odds with each other since the beginning of Season 5. At the end of Season 5 Volume 1, Steve, Dustin, Nancy (Natalie Dyer), and Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) found themselves trapped in the Upside Down. In the new trailer, Steve and Dustin prepare for a showdown with Vecna and the creatures of the Upside Down.
Judging by the footage, the two have put their differences aside and resumed their friendship. They both say to each other, “If you die, I die.” It’s a callback to a line Dustin said to Steve in Season 3.
Many fans are now worried that Steve, Dustin, or both might die in one of the upcoming episodes. “Protect Steve and Dustin omg,” X user @cinemanyas said.

Boy King pointed out the Season 3 moment that’s referenced in the trailer. “There’s no other choice for them but to make it out alive because they can’t live without each other,” Boy King wrote on X.
it means so much that it went from dustin saying it to steve to steve saying it to dustin and making it a promise from them both that they’re both gonna have to make it. that there’s no other choice for them but to make it out alive because they cant live without each other. pic.twitter.com/zzbJ8wvhDF— boy king (@girlwreckage) December 15, 2025
Sanmeyo ultimately believes Steve will push Dustin out of the way and sacrifice himself.

User @leia_romanova predicts it’s all a ruse so that Steve and Dustin surviving will be that much sweeter. Leia wrote, “The duffers putting ALL their effort into making us think steve and/or dustin will die and making their arc so emotional and heart-wrenching this season just to make their survival and happy endings that more shocking, impactful and exciting.”
