Sydney Sweeney is no stranger to being talked about online, but hearing just how much the hate dominates her social media feed is a bit upsetting. During the recent lie detector test on Vanity Fair, her co-star, Amanda Seyfried from The Housemaid, asked about her For You page, and Sweeney said: 

It depends what TikTok I’m on. If I’m on my private TikTok, my entire For You Page is history facts and arts and crafts. If I’m on my @syds_garage page, it’s sadly a lot of hate about me.

Why Is Sydney Sweeney the Target of Online Hate in 2025? 

First, Sydney Sweeney faced the “bathwater soap” controversy, which many found to be a deliberately provocative move. But much of the backlash against the actress can be traced back to her controversial American Eagle campaign. 

The ads had a tagline that said, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,” and many took it as an intentional pun on “great genes.” She was accused of being a white supremacist and racially insensitive for the same.

What made matters worse is Sydney Sweeney’s own words, given her long-standing policy of silence. During her GQ interview, she was given the opportunity to address the allegations and clear her name, but instead, she chose to say, “The ad spoke for itself.” 

This was the final straw for many, including Zendaya, who refused to do press alongside Sweeney for Euphoria’s upcoming season. She did not want to be associated with her after the controversy because The Housemaid star’s political standing was now questionable to many people. It’s no wonder she’s refusing to do it. It’s a difficult position for Zendaya to be in because if she even stands next to Sydney on the red carpet, it can be read as her excusing Sydney’s views on Trump and her refusal to apologise for the racist ad. 

In December 2025, Sweeney claimed to be shocked by the response (via People) and said that she is “against hate and divisiveness.” She reflected on how others were using her silence to impose their own interpretations, but all of this is too little and too late!
