After the recent string of releases of films that Sydney Sweeney is attached to, it seems like the actress’ career is heading in a downward trajectory based on the box office response, at least. So far, including her recent film, Christy, Sweeney has been part of two other films, titled Americana and Eden, in 2025.
Therefore, with her next film, titled The Housemaid, about to be released soon, it has become a crucial factor on the pivot in Sweeney’s career that she desperately needs, or this might just be it for her for a long time.
What We Know So Far About Sydney Sweeney’s The Housemaid

Based on the book of the same name by author Freida McFadden, The Housemaid is set to feature Sydney Sweeney in one of the lead roles alongside Amanda Seyfried. Other cast members include Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Elizabeth Perkins.
Sweeney is set to play the role of Millie Calloway, who is hired to work as a housemaid for a wealthy couple, Nina and Andrew. While everything seems to be OK at first, secrets of something sinister start to rear their head, which leads Millie to find something she was never supposed to.
Being an amazing psychological thriller novel from McFadden, the film is directed by filmmaker Paul Feig, who also directed A Simple Favor and Another Simple Favor recently. Initially, the film was supposed to be released on Christmas, but was later fast-forwarded to December 19th.
And according to first reactions from critics (via ScreenRant), it seems like this film has what it takes to break the box office curse plaguing Sweeney’s career.
Sydney Sweeney’s Box Office Failures Point to an Unsettling Trend
Despite retelling the story of a legendary female athlete with all the love and care, the box-office failure of Christy clarified two things. The first among them is the fact that despite her various and varied performances, she is unable to leave her ‘Sex Symbol’ persona through any of them, which has hurt her projects in the long run.
At the same time, it also has to do with her recent American Eagle Ad controversy, which has inadvertently led to rumors and other controversies being made from it.
And although the doom and gloom might seem like a trend that won’t evaporate easily, it takes one good film to make or break a star’s career. Looking at Christy’s reviews and ratings, it’s clear that the film was good, but not profitable financially, and at the same time, showcased how the actress can be dynamic on screen.
Adding to this, the first reactions of reviewers and critics, it does seem like The Housemaid has very likely chances of elevating Sweeney’s career from this downward spiral.
