Did Vince McMahon plan the worst possible storyline for Conor McGregor’s WrestleMania debut? On August 26, 2025, Enzo Amore, the former WWE Superstar, appeared as a guest on the Julian Dorey podcast, where he explained that Mr. McMahon directed him to trash-talk about McGregor and build tension with him, making him tweet on X. He said,
I was doing McGregor, bro. I went to the Conor McGregor–Floyd Mayweather fight because Vince McMahon sent me there. Vince McMahon, bro! What I’m telling you is, I was the Cruiserweight Champion of the f**king world, bro. Vince made me tweet.
The former Cruiserweight Champion explained that the then-Chairman of WWE pulled him and his partner, Big Cass, and announced that they were “breaking up.” Both were given their separate storylines, where Amore will be pushed for the Cruiserweight title, and picking a fight with McGregor will lead to him appearing at The Show of Shows. He continued,
Vince tells me what I’m doing. He goes, ‘You’re going to be the Cruiserweight Champ, and I want you tweeting at Conor McGregor, picking a fight. We want McGregor for f**king WrestleMania.’
Amore believes that their rivalry would have made sense, especially because he would talk a lot, but when it came to fighting, he would run away. He said,
Me versus McGregor because I’m becoming a bad guy heel, but I’m becoming the bad guy heel that runs his mouth, runs his mouth, and runs away. You get it?
Nevertheless, the idea never became a reality as WWE decided to pull the plug on the saga. Thus, keeping the Notorious away from the squared circle and keeping fans tirelessly waiting to make his debut in WWE.
Did WWE Tease Conor McGregor vs. Roman Reigns?
When it comes to Conor McGregor, he is no stranger to getting called out by the WWE Superstars and engaging in online feuds with them. One such case was in 2023, when Paul Heyman was the Wiseman of the OTC, Roman Reigns, and replied to the former UFC Champion on X, claiming that he was a wannabe copy of Reigns. Check out the tweet below:
. @TheNotoriousMMA is a @WWERomanReigns wannabe!!!@wwe @ufc @TheMacLife https://t.co/rb5DpXIZ9Z— Paul Heyman (@HeymanHustle) April 2, 2023
However, that was just the beginning because during an interview with TNT Sports Football, he once again called out McGregor, wondering if he would live long enough to be 57, and doubled down on his comments on him being a Roman Reigns wannabe. He said,
I’m not a grandfather, but I appreciate the fact that I’m old enough to be one, number one, and I’m still thriving on top. I would like to see if Conor McGregor at 57 is still thriving at the very top of his entire industry. We’ll see if he’s even relevant at 50. We’ll see if he even lives to 57 with his lifestyle now, number two. Number three, it’s not that he tweeted to me, I picked the fight with him.
He added,
Let’s be honest about this. He, as a Roman Reigns wannabe, did the Paul Heyman style, you know, title on each shoulder, and, you know, gave a shout out to himself. Of course, he did.
This comment rubbed Mystic Mac the wrong way, and he shot back at Paul Heyman and Roman Reigns, tweeting (via WrestlingNews.co) how at SummerSlam, something big could potentially happen between them.
Summerslam I’ll pull in on the yacht. Roman and Paul out the bus.
However, much to the disappointment of the fans, nothing happened between them. This once again left the WWE Universe scratching their heads, wondering if the wrestling promotion brand decided to cancel their match or if it was just one of those online feuds between the wrestlers and the UFC veteran.
Cody Rhodes Backs Conor McGregor for WrestleMania Spotlight
For ages, fans have seen Conor McGregor taking on his opponents in the octagon, and his constant feuds with the WWE Superstars have made him quite a notable name in the company. As a result, the combat sports fanatics have often desired to see him compete inside the squared circle, taking on his opponents in his showboat style.

Of course, he would be a natural, as he has competed at the highest level, and now with the WWE-UFC merger, a crossover storyline looks possible. On October 25, 2024, Cody Rhodes appeared as a guest on The Schmo, where he sided with the fans and expressed his desire to see him inside the WWE ring. He said,
I’ll say that one that I’d love to see just dip his toes in the WWE would be Conor. We were just talking about Proper Twelve whiskey, and Conor McGregor just to dip his toes, because the competition environment at WWE is different from what you might think. It’s so much about who has the most discipline, who’s the most professional, getting there to the finish line, getting there to a WrestleMania.
However, it was not only about having a new combat experience but also about trying the “entertainment side of sports,” and Rhodes emphasized how McGregor will be a great addition to the roster, who could shake things up.
