Ok, so the last episode really had my hopes up for this week’s Episode 7 of Tougen Anki. But did it deliver? Well, maybe yes, but not exactly in the way I wanted it to. Although we didn’t get to see why exactly Tsubakiri wants to take Shiki alive with him, at least it did give some spotlight to 2 other coolest characters in the series.
From the moment they were introduced, I found them really catchy, so I was also looking forward to learning more about Kiriyama and Kuina. So, for that, I can’t really complain too much about the episode. Maybe it was a bit of a weird episode, but since it was so visually spectacular (as the anime always is), and as a man of culture, I’ll let it slide.
Who Could Have Imagined That Kuina Would Be This Reliable?

The episode started off with a little backstory on Mei, the Oni girl who just lost her parents in Tsubakiri Momomiya’s assault. The anime did a good enough job in showing how innocent people are often left with no choice but to suffer for their ancestors’ sins.
Like, isn’t that so cruel? Mei didn’t do anything, nor did her parents, so why did they have to suffer such consequences? No matter how many times I see this kind of storytelling in anime, if it’s done right, it’ll always boil my blood a little, and that’s actually a good sign from a narrative perspective.
Now, skipping over Tsubakiri’s grand entrance part (which I’ll talk about soon), I just have to mention how unhinged Kuina and Kiriyama appeared throughout the episode. Like, so much serious stuff was going on in the background. Meanwhile, Kiriyama was constantly scared he might die, and Kuina just casually started flexing her powers.
But I have to say, Kuina’s Blood Release Technique was really something else. I’ll give her that much credit. I mean, you can’t even fight against her, since she can just manipulate your blood flow and make you lose the will to fight. Isn’t that kind of broken?
We also got a peek into Kuina’s past, as it was revealed how much she starts caring for others when people rely on her, especially if it’s a guy. So when Kiriyama showed dependency, she really popped off, defeating the infiltrated Ugly as if it were no big deal.
But you know what? For some reason, I have this intuition that Kiriyama is actually super OP, and he’s just not showing it yet. Next, I’d love to see his backstory as soon as possible. Anyway, this episode was definitely Kuina’s power highlight, but yeah, Tsubakiri also seems to be plotting something big that we can’t ignore.
Tsubakiri Isn’t Going Down So Easily; Would Kyoto’s Oni Division Survive?

Did they really think Mudano could handle Tsubakiri alone? How were they so relaxed after sending him to fight on the frontlines? Meanwhile, Kougasaki and the Playboy doctor, Kyouya, were having such a heartfelt conversation that they didn’t anticipate that Tsukibiri had already caught up to them.
He even silently stabbed Kyouya, and honestly, even I didn’t see that coming. But I thought, ‘He’s an Oni, a little stab shouldn’t hurt him at all, right?’ Well, I was wrong. Turns out members of the support unit really aren’t that powerful.
Although Kyouya tried to stall Tsubakiri from advancing further into the Kyoto Oni Division headquarters, he stood no chance, or at least, that’s how it seemed for now. Maybe he still has something up his sleeve.
Anyway, things got even more chaotic when Tsubakiri ordered more Uglies and had them bring in a mysterious package. What could be in there, I wonder? That’ll surely be the main focus of the next episode. So yeah, I’m definitely excited. I just want to see Shiki go berserk again and beat the crap out of Tsubakiri. Don’t you want to see that too?
Tougen Anki is currently available to watch on Netflix.
