Spread the love

Hayao Miyazaki is one of the few names within the anime industry that needs no introduction. His contributions to the community in the form of prominent anime movies have helped the industry earn global recognition, and thus, he is respected by even the biggest celebrities. Not only that, but the Japanese creator has received the greatest honors for his work.

He is the co-founder of Studio Ghibli and currently serves as its honorary chairman, but his real passion was creating unique and marvelous anime movies that inspired generations. Although Miyazaki has worked on many different projects, most of his global success came from the twelve movies he created with Studio Ghibli.

Thus, with decades of hard work and accomplishment, it is safe to assume that Miyazaki has made a lot of money during his career. His net worth is one of the highest within the anime world and being the Godfather of Studio Ghibli also brings in the big bucks, thus making him one of the richest creators.

Hayao Miyazaki’s net worth and earnings

Miyazaki’s career started six decades ago when he joined Toei Animation. Over the course of his life as a creator, he has been a film director, an animator, an artist, an illustrator, a producer, and a screenwriter. Thus, he has amassed a huge net worth that rivals even the biggest creators from all over the world.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, the Japanese creator has a net worth of $50 million. There are various factors that contribute to Miyazaki’s massive earnings, including the success of his anime feature films, royalties from streaming platforms, earnings from theatrical releases, merchandise, DVD sales(in the olden days), etc.

Also, as he is the co-founder and the current chairman of Studio Ghibli, a huge chunk of his earnings comes from the production studio. Thus, in many ways, Miyazaki’s massive net worth and his earnings are justified as he has given most of his life to his feature films and Studio Ghibli.

Hayao Miyazaki’s highest grossing movies

As mentioned above, most of Miyazaki’s earnings came from his feature films. Thus, it is safe to assume that these films have made huge numbers in terms of earnings on a global scale. If all the movies that Miyazaki created with Studio Ghibli are taken into account, the highest grossing movie would be Spirited Away (2001), which also earned him an Oscar.

According to Box Office Mojo, Spirited Away made around $358 million worldwide. It was followed by The Boy and the Heron (2023), which made $282 million worldwide, and Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), which made $240 million worldwide. After Howl’s Moving Castle, his highest-earning movie was Ponyo (2008), which made $206 million worldwide.

There are other movies too, like Princess Mononoke (1997) and The Wind Rises (2013), which collected massively from the Box Office, but they were nowhere close to Miyazaki’s highest-earning movies. However, there are also some movies that didn’t make as big of an impact at the time of their release but later became popular on a global level. The perfect example of this is Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989), Nausicaä of the Valley Wind (1984), etc.

Hayao Miyazaki’s family and his biggest asset

Hayao Miyazaki has always kept his personal life private, and not much is known about his personal belongings and assets. But it’s safe to assume that the biggest thing he owns is probably Studio Ghibli. Being the co-founder and chairman of one of the biggest production studios in the world makes him part-owner of the company.

According to Ghibli Wiki, Miyazaki had three other brothers, and he was the second son of Katsuji Miyazaki and Yoshiko. He lived through the Second World War and thus had to move frequently which led to him completing his education from different places. When he was a child, he had many physical deficiencies and, thus was very weak.
