Severance is no stranger to using cryptic symbolism, which has contributed to a boatload of theories since the series’ inception. The intro itself leans towards the puzzling nature of the show, and even with just four episodes left in season 2 of the revered series, viewers still have more questions than answers.

But this hasn’t prevented viewers from connecting the dots, and some fans have pointed out the disturbing undertone in season 1’s pilot, which has to do with the tragedy of Mark’s wife, Gemma.

Gemma’s history makes the scene more brutal

Beds in Severance seems to have more to offer than it seems at first glance, especially the intro of season 2, and with the benefit of hindsight, it seems the season 1 pilot itself has some dark undertones when it comes to Mark’s bed. The pilot sees Adam Scott‘s Mark in a race car bed, and while it might’ve to do with Innie Mark’s younger mental age, given the context of his wife’s seeming death, it makes it all the more disturbing.

Prior to the revelation of Ms. Casey, which opened a whole new can of worms for viewers, it was largely believed that Gemma died in a car crash, and it was Mark’s grief that pushed him to Severance in the first place. Although it’s evident that there is more to her and Lumon might be involved, Mark’s decision to sleep at the race car bed could be the writer’s way of highlighting his grief.

A Lana Del Rey song helped Dichen Lachman with Ms. Casey and Mark’s dynamic

Speaking of her approach to Ms. Cassey, Dichen Lachman revealed that a Lana Del Rey song shaped her understanding of the dynamic between Mark and Ms. Cassey, even though the latter is unaware of it in the first season. Elaborating on it, she said (via /Film):

I had this song, it was a Lana Del Ray song. Maybe it’s corny, but I would listen to it and I’d think about their relationship. Not that it was that important, because throughout the show, Ms. Casey never realizes that. But just to create some background of a memory of something, that maybe even if she’s not aware, creating why she might be drawn to Mark, even if she has no idea.

On the bright side, series creator Dan Erickson has assured fans that season 2 will explore the truth of Gemma/Ms. Casey’s reality, and given how perplexing things have been, fans can definitely use some answers.
