The 19-year-old joined Chelsea in a deal worth €16.5 million in August, but he was immediately loaned back to his boyhood club in order to continue his development.

However, Chelsea have now confirmed Anselmino’s return with a statement on their club website.

“Aaron Anselmino has been recalled from his loan spell at Boca Juniors,” it read. “The Argentine defender joined the Blues from Boca in August, penning a long-term deal, before heading back to La Bombonera on loan to continue his development.

“Aaron made 18 appearances for Boca across all competitions during his loan spell and became a regular in the backline. Welcome back to Chelsea, Aaron!”

According to BBC Sport, Anselmino has returned to Chelsea in order to adapt to English football and he will be gently eased into the first-team over the next few months.

The recall of Anselmino is the second transfer decision to have been confirmed by Chelsea in January, with Gabriel Slonina also returning from a loan spell at League One outfit Barnsley.

Furthermore, Ben Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka and Cesare Casadei are among the players linked with a mid-season departure from Stamford Bridge, while significant incomings aren’t expected.

News of Anselmino’s return to Chelsea comes after Boca Juniors president Juan Roman Riquelme tipped him to become a regular for the Argentina national team in the future.

“He has developed a lot,” Riquelme told ESPN following the end of Anselmino’s spell at Boca Juniors. “With the growth, the head that he has and the desire to learn that he shows, he is on his way to being a great footballer

“He is going to be a player for the national team. He is going to compete with the centre-backs.”
