European Colonization
In the 19th century, Germany colonized the area, known as German East Africa, which included present-day Tanzania, Burundi, and Rwanda. After Germany’s defeat in World War I, the League of Nations mandated the territory to Britain, renaming it Tanganyika.
Independence and Unification
Tanganyika gained independence from Britain in 1961 under the leadership of Julius Nyerere, a prominent advocate for African socialism. In 1964, Tanganyika united with the islands of Zanzibar, forming the United Republic of Tanzania. Nyerere became the country’s first president and led with a socialist vision, implementing the Ujamaa policy for rural development, which emphasized collective farming but faced economic challenges.
Modern Era
Since Nyerere stepped down in 1985, Tanzania has gradually transitioned to a market-oriented economy. The country has focused on economic reforms, tourism, and mining industries, particularly gold and natural gas. 1. TAZARA Railway

Overview: TAZARA, also known as the “Uhuru Railway” or “Freedom Railway,” connects Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia, spanning approximately 1,860 kilometers (1,160 miles).
History: Built between 1970 and 1975 with substantial funding and technical support from China, TAZARA was seen as a symbol of African independence and solidarity, particularly as it provided Zambia a route to the sea bypassing apartheid-controlled South Africa.
Significance: It serves as a vital trade route for Zambia, providing access to Dar es Salaam’s port for the export of copper and import of goods.
Challenges: In recent years, TAZARA has faced financial and operational difficulties, including aging infrastructure, inadequate maintenance, and declining freight and passenger services. Various rehabilitation efforts, supported by the Chinese government and other partners, aim to improve its efficiency.

2. Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC)

Overview: TRC operates the central line and other networks that connect key regions within Tanzania, including the major line from Dar es Salaam to Kigoma on Lake Tanganyika, and another to Mwanza on Lake Victoria.
Infrastructure: The central line is approximately 1,250 kilometers (776 miles) long, and the network is largely narrow-gauge, which has limited train speeds and capacity.
Modernization Efforts: To enhance the railway’s capacity and efficiency, Tanzania embarked on a Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project in 2017. The SGR, when completed, will connect Dar es Salaam to Mwanza, with additional connections to neighboring countries.
