Creature Commandos: James Gunn Unpacks Batman’s Cameo & Future DCU Plans

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has opened up about Batman‘s brief, but memorable appearance in the newest episode of Creature Commandos.

Following the release of Creature Commandos Episode 6, “Priyatel Skelet,” on Max, Gunn and showrunner Dean Lorey sat down with Rotten Tomatoes to unpack all the Easter eggs and cameos in the episode, including the silhouette of Batman that briefly appears.

“When they first gave it to me, we saw a lot more Batman, and I [was] saying, ‘I am not ready to commit to that. I’m not ready to commit to that. I’m not ready to commit to that,’” Gunn recalled. “So I [was] just like ‘more silhouette, more silhouette, more silhouette.’”

Batman apprehends Doctor Phosphorus in Creature Commandos

Both the Batman and Gotham City shown in “Priyatel Skelet” are very different from the ones fans saw a few years earlier in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, confirming that Robert Pattinson is unlikely to be reprising the role from the 2022 movie for the DCU. Batman is presented as an already-established hero in the DCU, with Gunn reaffirming that his origin story will not be retold since he already exists in the universe, similar to how the upcoming Superman movie begins with the citizens of Metropolis already aware of who the Man of Steel is.

While DCU fans don’t get to see much of Batman, who is the reason Doctor Phosphorus ended up at Belle Reve, Gunn confirmed that the Caped Crusader is set to play “an important part of this universe. He has an impact on it including defeating such pretty dangerous scary people like [Doctor] Phosphorus who’s pretty tough.”

He continued, “This is the DCU Batman. We’re going to do great things with him. He’s the most popular superhero in the world and I can’t wait for people to see more of him along with Superman and together.”

The first six episodes of Creature Commandos are currently streaming on Max. The seventh and final episode of Season 1 debuts on the streamer on January 9, 2025.
