What If…? ended after Season 3 Episode 8 became available on Disney+. The final season has drawn largely positive responses from the critics, but the reaction of the general audience has been mixed to negative. And now, Beau DeMayo, the former head writer of X-Men ’97, has voiced his opinion about the new season.

X-Men ‘97’s Beau DeMayo reveals thoughts on What If…? season 3

Beau DeMayo expressed his strong views on What If…? Season 3 through his account on X (formerly, Twitter) during the weekend. He posted, “#whatif season 3 yikes just yikes.”

In the comment section of the post, DeMayo added, “I’d watch more to give notes on how it could’ve easily been done better but I have some water to watch boil.”

DeMayo further elaborated on his opinion while responding to the users who replied in the comment section. When one user disclosed their concerns about X-Men ’97 Season 2, DeMayo claimed that he knew Marvel and Matthew Chauncey (What If…? writer who boarded X-Men ’97 to write the third season and serve as the overseer of the Season 2 rewrites) had torn up his (DeMayo’s) “intercut time hopping across the first episodes because it was ‘too complicated.’”

DeMayo went on to call the season “mediocre.” Another user asked what Beau DeMayo felt was wrong with What If…? Season 3, noting that they knew who the latter was and what happened between him and Marvel. In response, DeMayo shared that the season had “no substance” and felt like a “fanfic.” He added, “The dialogue is flat and so obvious, and some of the premises are just weird.”

Replying to one user who opined that Season 3 was weaker than the previous chapter, DeMayo posted that the third season was also “where AC Bradley completely stepped back for Chauncey to take over.”

Notably, What If…? Season 3 has accumulated a 75% approval rating from the critics and a disappointing 46% rating from the audience. In March 2024, Marvel fired DeMayo before the premiere of X-Men ‘97.
