In the wake of Sonic 3‘s theatrical release, director Jeff Fowler has come out to share his two cents on the franchise’s future. The film series kickstarted in 2020 and instantly managed to attract fans’ attention due to its captivating narrative. The Sonic franchise has only gone onwards and upwards since then and has facilitated the big-screen debut of several fan-favorite characters such as Knuckles, Doctor Eggman, and more. However, one easy-going member that has yet to feature in the movies is Big the Cat. In a recent discussion, Fowler opened up about the character’s absence and his possible future in subsequent Sonic 4 sequels.
Big the Cat could make his debut after Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Jeff Fowler admitted to being aware of Big the Cat’s popularity among the Sonic fandom, as well as how his inclusion would affect the fate of the franchise.
While talking to Dexerto, the Gopher Broke director stated, “I think that everyone always jokes about Big the Cat, so I can’t say when or where or how, but we’re very aware of his popularity and what that might mean for our movie universe. He’s a fan favorite, he’s certainly one of my favorites.”
However, he also expressed the persisting uncertainty regarding Big the Cat’s potential appearance in Sonic 4 and/or its future sequels. “But who knows when he’ll find his way to the big screen,” remarked Fowler.
Making his video-game debut in 1998’s Sonic Adventure, Big the Cat was introduced as a calm and gentle character despite his dominant stature. He resides near the Mystic Ruins alongside his mate, Froggy. Despite Big the Cat’s importance to the Sonic lore, Fowler has followed a different approach in the film franchise so far. He has explained that he likes to “cherry-pick” themes from games rather than adapting the source material as it is.
At the time of writing, Paramount Pictures is developing Sonic 4 and is aiming for a 2027 release date. In the meantime, fans can enjoy the film series’ latest installment, Sonic 3, which premiered in the theatres on December 20, 2024.
