Report: Andor Season 1 & 2’s Total Budgets Are Almost $650 Million

Disney has revealed detailed production costs for Andor, its Star Wars streaming series starring Diego Luna as Cassian Andor. The show, a two-season prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, has reached a total production cost of over $645 million, with the Andor Season 2 budget alone amounting to $290.9 million. This disclosure highlights the financial investment in one of the franchise’s most expansive projects to date.

Disney has reported that the total cost for the two-season Star Wars streaming series Andor is over $645 million (via Deadline).

Season 2 accounted for $290.9 million in production costs, exceeding the $275 million budget of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). This places Andor among the most expensive Star Wars productions, based on the U.K. financial filings tied to tax rebate programs.

Production of Season 2 faced delays due to industry strikes. Filming began in November 2022 but paused mid-2023 during the SAG-AFTRA strike. It resumed in January 2024 and concluded in February. The $290.9 million budget excludes post-2023 expenses, so the final cost is likely higher. Ongoing post-production work, including visual effects, continues to add to the overall cost.

Andor benefited from the U.K.’s tax rebate program, receiving $129 million in reimbursements (via Forbes). Productions in the U.K. qualify for rebates of up to 25.5% of eligible expenses by meeting specific criteria, including the involvement of U.K. personnel and the use of local facilities. The tax rebate significantly reduced Disney’s spending on the series, which Disney filmed at Pinewood Studios and other locations in the U.K.

Creator Tony Gilroy designed Andor as a two-season prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The series follows Cassian Andor’s journey, culminating just days before the events of Rogue One. Season 2 is expected to release in April 2025, concluding the planned story arc.

With a combined budget of $645 million, Andor highlights the financial scale of modern streaming productions. Its cost reflects both its intricate storytelling and extensive use of physical and visual effects, making it a significant investment for Disney and the Star Wars franchise.
