Marvel’s Byrdie and her origin explained
Byrdie is an original character created by Marvel Studios for What If…? Season 3. She is the latest original character created for the show after Kahhori, who made her debut in Season 2.
In What If…? Season 3, Byrdie is depicted as the human/Duckworldian hybrid daughter of an alternate reality version of Dr. Darcy Lewis and Howard the Duck. This alternate reality version of Darcy and Howard the Duck appeared to have got drunkenly married in one of the first season’s episodes, titled “What If… Thor Were an Only Child?”
As an egg, Byrdie was rumored to have possessed immense cosmic powers. This made her a target for various powerful factions like the Olympians, Ravagers, Zealots, Dark Elves, and the Black Order led by Thanos, forcing her parents to take her and go on the run in order to evade them. Byrdie eventually hatched from her egg and unleashed a powerful cosmic blast that killed the factions. She and her parents then returned home.
Natasha Lyonne, who will be a part of the upcoming MCU Fantastic Four reboot, has been cast as the adult version of the character.
What powers and abilities does Marvel’s Byrdie have?
Byrdie’s powers include cosmic energy manipulation and flight.
Since Byrdie’s birth happened simultaneously with the Convergence, she developed powerful golden cosmic energy. While inside the egg, she could unleash small blasts capable of pushing back her enemies. However, after hatching, her cosmic power became strong enough to destroy powerful opponents like Thanos and the Olympians.
As an adult, she has developed wings, that allow her to fly.
What If…? Season 3’s first five episodes are currently streaming on Disney Plus. The new season will end on December 29, 2024. Jeffrey Wright headlines the series as The Watcher, while also serving as a narrator for the episodes.
