Violet Evergarden Director Refused to Let the Anime Become a Love Story Focusing on Gilbert and Violet

Spread the love

Violet Evergarden is a hauntingly beautiful light novel series by Kana Akatsuki, which has moved the hearts of millions, literally. This mesmerizing tale of self-discovery, love, and loss effortlessly climbs up even among the other series with the same themes, and most of its viewers would say the same.

The light novel was already a huge success when it was first published. And the anime adaptation by studio Kyoto Animation further catapulted Violet Evergarden‘s popularity to its peak.

In a past interview, the creators behind the anime film Violet Evergarden: The Movie, which came in 2020, shed some light on their creative process. The session was held with the series’ director Taichi Ishidate and producer Shinichirō Hatta. It turned out that Ishidate made a deliberate effort to reduce romantic elements in the Violet Evergarden movie. But why?

Director Ishidate deliberately tried to avoid romantic elements in the movie

From the very beginning, Violet Evergarden has addressed various forms of love, and not just romantic love! It shows the complexity of human relations and emotions. By so doing, the series developed a gripping narrative that people can relate to, beyond the traditional romantic stories.

All of Violet’s character development in the series has been through experiences about various kinds of love between different relationships of other people, such as that between parents and their children, emotional connection between siblings, or simply tragic stories of separated lovers. Through all these interactions, Violet becomes a more humane character whose story really comes to shine brighter with each passing episode.

Interestingly, in a past interview, director Ishidate talked about his thought process that went into the making of Violet Evergarden: The Movie, where he claimed that he never intended to make the movie just a love story. He explained that focusing solely on Violet and Gilbert’s relationship would have turned the story into a typical romance, which was not his intention at all.

if the focus was just on Violet and Gilbert then it would become a love story… I did not create the TV series with that intent.

Instead, they focused on Violet’s personal journey, exploring the path she takes through life and its impact on future generations. This approach resulted in a movie that is both a beautiful conclusion to the series and a powerful exploration of the human experience.

The ending of Violet Evergarden: The Movie was simply phenomenal

The Violet Evergarden: The Movie was hugely appreciated for its fitting conclusion to the series. Director Ishidate said that he always wanted to create a very deliberate climax for the movie which will keep the suspense alive until it just blows in and hits us like a truck. This was certainly a successful attempt to make the series more cohesive and impactful in that way.

The film served as a kind of closure for the fans, tying loose ends left open by the end of the first season. The movie was like a perfect, happy yet sad, goodbye to this beloved show for many viewers, with finally having the feeling of completeness. The beauty of the final confession scene brought the story together in an emotional finale, making it life-long and memorable for the viewers.

Violet Evergarden is available to watch on Netflix.
