The Hating Game Star Lucy Hale, who had a cameo in the Slasher Scream 4, joined forces with The Flash Star Grant Gustin for the recent rom-com Puppy Love. The movie follows the story of two dog owners, who, after their disastrous first date, are forced to rekindle their bond after their dogs fall in love with each other.
While the movie as a whole doesn’t go above and beyond its basic premise, some strong performances from Gustin and Hale make the movie a worthwhile experience for fans. But one of the most interesting aspects of the movie was the name of Hale’s dog, whose name in the rom-com is Channing Tatum, which the Scream Star clarified wasn’t the initial choice.

Channing Tatum Wasn’t Initially the Favorite to Make the Movie
The dog in the movie being named after Step Up Star Channing Tatum is a nod to the Hollywood period when naming pets after celebrities was pretty common in movies. One prominent example of this tradition is Holly Hunter’s cat, who was named after The Exorcist Star Linda Blair in Steven Spileberg‘s 1989 romance Always.

However, before Channing Tatum was finalized for Lucy Hale’s dog in Puppy Love, the actor revealed that many more names were considered, with one being Mutt Damon. And considering she was personally a fan of the name, Mutt Damon, she was a bit disappointed after he didn’t make it into the movie. She told TVInsider:
“So we had a lot of names that we went through, but there were a couple of scenes that unfortunately didn’t make the cut of the movie that fill in that blank. But it’s kind of funny that the first time you hear, it is Grant saying, ‘Oh, this must be Channing Tatum,’ when we meet. And you’re like, ‘Wait, what?’ But some of the other ones ranged from Mark Ruffalo to Mutt Damon. Mutt Damon is really good. I don’t know who eventually decided on Channing Tatum, but it’s pretty funny.”
While hearing the characters calling the dog by Mutt Damon would’ve been hysterical, Channing Tatum too doesn’t disappoint.

Channing Tatum amazed Lucy Hale in Puppy Love
Reflecting on acting with Channing Tatum, Lucy Hale explained she was amazed by the fact of how well-trained the dog was, stating that Tatum had human-like expressions. She continued,
“These dogs are so well-trained. It’s pretty crazy, actually. Specifically, Nicole’s dog is [played onscreen by] Fancypants, and Fancypants is a star within the canine film world. Fancy’s been in commercials and movies, is smart, and has actual human expressions. So, they were very well-behaved.”

But despite the prowess of Channing Tatum and great performances from both Hale and Gustin, the movie isn’t something that’ll stick with fans for a long period, even though it is a sweet watch.
Puppy Love is available to rent on Apple TV.
