Sydney Sweeney and Dakota Johnson in Madame Web
This is the first time fans will get a live-action iteration of Madame Web / Cassandra Webb. In the comics, she appears as an elderly woman with myasthenia gravis, connected to a life support system resembling a spiderweb. What are Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web’s abilities?
Madame Web in Marvel Comics
In the comics, Madame Web possessed psychic abilities including telepathy, clairvoyance, and prescience. As per the Marvel Database, she can also perform astral projection and appear to others in spirit form. In simple words, she has the ability to read minds and project thoughts, and the ability to gain information about an object, person, location, or physical event through extrasensory perception.
While most of her powers are showcased in the film, her physical attributes are very inaccurate. In the comics, she is an elderly mutant who is handicapped, lacking most function in her limbs and she also suffers from a condition known as myasthenia gravis which makes her blind. This inaccuracy is one of the main reasons why the trailer of Madame Web (2024) has left the fans with mixed opinions.

How does Madame Web die in the comics?
Julia Carpenter as Madame Web in Marvel Comics
In Marvel Comics’ The Gauntlet and Grim Hunt 2009–2010 comic book storylines, Madame Web was captured by the Kravinoff to help them defeat Spider-Man and resurrect Kraven. Later in the comics, when the ritual fails, Aleksandra Kravinoff cuts Madame Web’s throat and in the last moment of her life, she transfers her powers to Julia Carpenter, making her the second Madame Web.
Judging by the trailer, it seems like the filmmakers haven’t depicted this storyline. Despite the inaccuracies, it is certainly exciting to see a live-action iteration of Madame Web for the first time. Even Ezekiel Sims, who main antagonist of the film, has a different physical appearance compared to the comics. Madame Web is scheduled to be released in the United States on February 14, 2024.
