With its initial release back in 1992, Mortal Kombat has been one of the longest-running franchises in gaming history. Its name is constantly uttered in conversation by gamers worldwide and with the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1 title, several gamers will be looking forward to a whole new story. It is the hope of many that this new entry will catch attention and bring older players back into the fray as they see their favorite characters battle it out.
Since its initial release, Mortal Kombat has seen numerous different games through the years. Whether they are mainstream titles or spin-offs, all of these different works have tended to follow the same story and development among the characters. But as the game franchise has been going for 30 years, the story has become quite complicated and confusing, especially for newer players.
Due to this, NetherRealm Studios, the developer of Mortal Kombat, made the decision to reboot the franchise and try to create a whole new timeline. This evolution opens the door for a new story that can change certain aspects of the history. Players can then receive a brand-new experience, whilst also enjoying the same gameplay and interactions they enjoyed throughout the past installments of the franchise.
Due to these changes in the timeline and the future of the story, many gamers have been wondering what will happen in regards to any future installments to the Mortal Kombat franchise. There is now a question of whether or not the next set of games will continue in this new story or will divert to a different story altogether.

What Has the Netherrealm Studios Staff Said Regarding the Future of Mortal Kombat?
As Mortal Kombat 1 shakes things up, gamers are wondering what comes next.
During a recent preview event for Mortal Kombat 1, NetherRealm Studios Story Director Dominic Ciancolo was asked what he thought about the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1 title, and what excited him regarding the changes to the story. He explained that he felt this was a complete reboot to the franchise and NetherRealm isn’t looking at this as just another spin-off or one-off entry in the franchise. This is a whole new story and he regards this as a “first step” of the larger plot for the future of the franchise.
Due to this, we get the feeling the future of Mortal Kombat will be a brand-new experience for players as they see a whole new story unfold, with character development changes, new interactions, and new battles. Hopefully, NetherRealm Studios will continue to follow through with this after the release of Mortal Kombat 1. Unfortunately, with a few different titles under development within NetherRealm Studios, we won’t likely see the next installment in the Mortal Kombat franchise for a few years.
